Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks Europe's True Danger: Economic Decline.

The recent US national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" agendas represent an existential risk to European civilization. Yet, this perspective is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual challenge facing Europe is not societal but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry 13.5% growth for the EU. Over this period, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Today, roughly half of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity stems from superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech dominance is decidedly American. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity raises a pressing question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does Europe stand? Experts widely agree it is essentially a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, there are causes for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to propose serious reform. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, without bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
